It is an introduction to science experiments. Light and color are the center of the unit and we are on quest to find the ways they are used in this world. Light is all around us, in all sorts of forms: and yet, in our modern environment, we take it almost for granted, whether it be the light coming from the sun above our heads when we walk, or the lights in our house that we can switch on and off as we please. Once we pay special attention to the different kinds of light that surround us, and play and experiment with ways we can manipulate it, we become aware of it is a identifiable and tangible feature of our everyday lives, but also that it has special properties that allow us to use it as a tool, or a utensil, very much like that of crayon, or paint. We discover that artists in fact use light precisely in this way; as a medium to express themselves, as they would with any other solid medium. The children embark on a journey of rediscovery and exploration where characteristics, properties and qualities of light are brought to the fore, this salience allowing them to bring about a new appreciation of this physical feature of our universe.
